Reflection on Portfolio Project

The project has officially almost come to an end. It was a great experience but I am more than happy to finally wrap this up. One thing that I did learn form this project about myself; schedule or no schedule, I always end up procrastinating. But that has given me motivation and the courage to not procrastinate.

I remember the first day we were assigned this project and I was way over my head about it. I got all to excited and completely used up my dopamine which cause me to not enjoy later on towards the end of the project. Other than that I did have difficulties with my original idea for the project, which I had to change due to my actor not being able to show up as well as personal issues, and so we ended up with the film opening "Stranger."

Blog posts. Even though I did not keep up with the posts we had to do, I really did enjoy posting. It felt nice to look back at my progress and how far I have come (not very far). Talking about enjoyment, I also enjoyed the research part, specifically watching and analyzing film openings. I had enjoyed brainstorming ideas for the film opening as well as it helped me become a more creative person than I was at the beginning of the project..

I have came to notice that now when I watch films or shows I am unconsciously analyzing the film through shots, angles, lighting, and mise-en-scene elements. Which I find fascinating as our teacher at the start of the year had told us we would see media from a whole new perspective after this class, I had my doubts. Considering I am someone who did not do their best in this class, but still unconsciously now is able to see forms of media from a different perspective goes to show how big of an impact this project, class, and teacher had on me.

CCR #2, #3, & #4 Research

Question #2 for CCR:

"How does your product engage with audience and how would it be distributed as a real media text?"

Major point to talk about:

  • Audience consists of age teens up to young adults (14-19), targeted towards girls,
  • targeted towards teens through props and mise-en-scene elements such as, the main character (Lucky) being obsessed with her phone.
  • Our film will be distributed through YouTube. We want our production to get out there and be seen by people rather than focusing on making a profit.
Script:
" Our film is mainly for the teen audience, especially girls aged around 14-19.  We focus on behaviors that are similar to teens; for instance, our main character, Lucky, is constantly on her phone, it shows that today is the time of the digital age, which is to help engage with the teen audience. Lucky is also seen to be wearing pink and have stuffed animal in her room which is to help target our female audience. For the distribution, we plan to release it onto YouTube. Our goal is not to make a profit but to get our production out there and to be seen. YouTube is a great platform to reach a wide audience due to it's algorithm feature."

Question #3 for CCR:

How does production skills develop throughout project?"
  • Began to explore existing examples and styles (previous student made projects)
  • Learned how to turn information into solid idea rather than just an inspiration
  • I learned to adapt to problems for example when I could not follow through with m first idea and had to switch it.
Script:
"at the start of the project my production skills were not good so I focused on research. I looked at many previously done productions, similar projects and films to what I wanted to do. For the actual production work, I did have difficulty as I do not have very good camera skills but it turned out fine. I enjoyed the research part more than the actual production, I believe it is because I chose to work alone for the project and things can get difficult when having to handle things on your own. We posted the whole process on our blog posts. Honestly, I did not enjoy posting blogs it felt stressful but that is because I would not follow through with my own created schedule. Overall, I did enjoy this project but I am glad it is finally over."

Question # 4 For CCR:

"How did you interrogate technology- software, online, and hardware?"
  • Using blogger to post about research; helps me keep track of what I have done and what need to be done. Where I need to improve, how I have improved.
  • Clipchamp. Editing software- Major problem was during editing my final it had major issues with updating what I have edited. So I would need to constantly re-edit what i had already edited.
  • I used a phone to record- did not have a problem there.
Script:
"I used a mix of different software and online platforms to trac my process and to assist with my production. To record the film opening I used a phone, it was a very simple process and it did not give me much problem. Which was much appreciated compared to the editing software I used- Clipchamp. Clipchamp had major issues with updating my editing progress, sometimes the changes I would make wouldn't save properly. That caused me to re-edit numerous times, which significantly slowed down the whole process. Last but not least, I used blogger. Blogger helped me keep track of my research, planning, as well as my filming and editing process. Bloggers acted as a timeline of my progress for the project. Although I did have difficulty with editing, which of course was frustrating, it helped me improve my ability to adapt when things don't go a planned as well as teach me patients."

CCR #1 Research

 Question #1 for CCR:

"How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?"

Major points to talk about in CCR:

  • My genre is slice of life
  • issues represented: procrastination, stress
  • key themes of teen in slice of life include handling peer pressure, insecurities, and forming identity. My film opening follows the outline of showing the struggles but focuses on procrastination, which in media for teens are not represented very often. Even when it is shown, it often gets played off as "laziness" and put aside.
  • Procrastination and laziness if often mixed up in media. Some background information: procrastination is when one had the intend to do and complete a task but has internal factors stopping them. For example, needing things to go in a perfect order/ time(shown in my film opening) or being scared to mess up. Where as laziness is when the individual has no intension what so ever to finish or even start a task.
  • Procrastination being represented as it is in real life in media is often rare, especially when it comes to teens; it is perceived as laziness. In reality it goes much deeper than just that.
  • My film opening focuses on showing how procrastination can create stress and stop a person from enjoying their time.
